Today, March 8th, marks International Women’s Day. It’s a day to celebrate not just the great women of our world, but a fight for a more balanced society.
This date has inspired me to write about the two most inspiring women in my life, and what these great women mean to me. The meaning of this day has an association different to everyone I’m sure – but I hope you can enjoy what it means to me nonetheless.
Mothers are some of the most important female figures in lives across the world. But to me, there’s no mother quite like mine.
Ever since I was little, I knew just how strong my mother is – in ways I wish I could be. From the passion she has for her job to her caring heart, everything she does is to make sure you feel better. I have to remind her that it’s okay to go and buy clothes and spoil herself, because she believes her money could be used on someone else.
But the most important thing about my mum is that she is my best friend. There’s no one in the world that I would ever rely on, like I rely on her. She has an answer and a solution for every problem, and she turns my tears into smiles. And I hope that as I grow older, I turn into her more and more. If so, I’ll be the best person on this planet.
I could talk all day about her, but instead of telling you, I’ll be sure to tell her myself.
2) MY NAN
Just like I said about mums, I’m sure the same applies to many people’s nans, grandma’s, and Nanna’s. But there’s something special about my Nanny June, because as the years go by, the memories I have in her grow fonder and fonder.
Growing up, there was no one quite like her. She was someone I missed terribly as we lived across the country from each other – and today, I miss her even more now she is not here. She was the perfect Nan, with a little feisty side which I admired. I still remember the colourful clothes she wore, the sound of her laugh, and the gentle touch of her skin.
She treated me and my brother as real grandchildren – as she was technically my great aunt. It makes me treasure her that little bit more. When I come into any problem in my life, I always think of what she would do – and hopefully, I can become even half the women she was. The love, laughs and memories she has given me, and the effect she has had on my life, is why she is still one of the most inspiring women in my life.
I just wish I could tell her.
International Women’s Day is about celebrating the women who have made a positive impact in your life. The way I felt like doing that is through the power of words. It’s so sad that only one of the two women I have talked about can read this, but I know she knew just how much she meant to me.
If you have a special women in your life, be sure to let them know. And remember, the most special women reading this right now is you. You’re strong, you’re beautiful, and you’re doing amazing.
And finally, I wish you a happy International Women’s Day! I’d love to know who the special people in your life are, so please let me know in the comments!
